Doug the Runner at 2013 Walk to Cure!

JDRF is excited to announce that the “Hero of Health and Fitness 2012,” Doug the Runner will be joining us on Walk day, April 13, 2013! In 2012 Doug Masiuk became the first type-1 diabetic to run across the United States. Doug is a long distance runner running up to a marathon plus a day. He believes a healthy diet and exercise are the keys to a healthy life for diabetics and non-diabetics alike. He requires a quarter of the insulin that he once required through running and a finely tuned diet. Diagnosed at age 3 and having lived with diabetes for over 35 years, Doug has never accepted his type-1 as a reason to give up, give in, or simply stop. On September 21, 2013, Doug Masiuk and the 1Run.org team’s goal will be getting 1 million people to run 1 mile for Diabetes. 1Run represents Masiuk’s personal triumph and marks the beginning of a movement to OutRun diabetes!

So please, join us and Doug the Runner for the Walk to Cure Diabetes on April 13, 2013!

2013 Walk to Cure Diabetes: Registration Open!

JDRF Maryland Announces Open Registration for Walk to Cure Diabetes

3,000 walkers expected to participate in annual walk to raise funds for diabetes research

Saturday, April 13 at M&T Bank Stadium

Baltimore, MD – February 4, 2013 – The Maryland Chapter of JDRF announced today that registration is open for the 2013 Maryland Walk to Cure Diabetes.  The walk will be held on Saturday, April 13 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore from 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.  The Maryland chapter’s fundraising goal for this statewide event is to raise $700,000 for research to find better treatments and a cure for diabetes and its complications.

JDRF officials urge Marylanders to sign up now to support this very worthwhile cause. “We are excited about this year’s walk as another opportunity to join forces and work toward our ultimate goal–finding a cure. We hope to gain more supporters and participants this year and to make even more of an impact than we have in previous years, “said JDRF Maryland Development Director Kathy Burk.  She cites recent successes like current clinical trials of the Artificial Pancreas and other therapies that can further help those living with the disease to improve their quality of life.

“We encourage everyone to register today and help us walk to find a cure,” she concluded.

Participants may register as a new or veteran team, join an existing  team, or register as an individual, by going to www.jdrfmd.org or call JDRF Maryland at 410-636-8080. Families are also encouraged to enjoy the walk together as this year’s walk event features two options:  a 3.2 mile (5K) option and a shorter family “fun” walk option; both routes start and finish at M&T Bank Stadium, and parking is free.  Festivities at the event include live entertainment, dancing, kids’ activities and food.

The Walk to Cure Diabetes is supported both nationally and locally.  National partners include Advance Auto Parts, Ford Motor Company, Marshalls, Walgreens, Roche, Accu-Check, and Hyvee.  Current local sponsors include Chesapeake Bank of Maryland, Network Building and Consulting, LLC, Rosedale Federal Savings and Loan, and Merrick Towle Communications.   A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available; for information on how you can support the 2013 JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, including sponsorship opportunities, contact Kathy Burk at 443-792-4231.

JDRF Walks are held in more than 200 cities worldwide.  Nearly 500,000 people nationally walked last year, raising almost $100 million for research to cure, treat, and prevent type 1 diabetes (T1D).
